Residents return home in Damascus Barzeh district (VIDEO)

Jan 26, 2014

Over five hundred displaced Syrians marched near Barzeh in Damascus to enter the war-torn district. Reconciliation between warring sides brought back stability to the area and a chance to return for those who were forced out after foreign-backed militants got fortified inside their homes.

Before civilians were asked to get back, the Syrian government removed the rubble and opened the streets, rehabilitating the area. The impact of clashes inside Barzeh is clearly visible. Some houses are damaged while others are not. However, the most significant detail for the families is that Barzeh has been secured. A Syrian army siege imposed on the militants there forced many to surrender in January 2014. Later, reconciliation was reached and those who used to be Syrian members of the so-called Free Syrian Army stand today alongside Syrian army personnel after forcing the foreign fighters to leave their neighborhoods. The Syrian army is currently in control of the town. Barzeh is considered the first area to witness a genuine agreement between the F-S-A and the Syrian government. Hundreds of families were able to re-enter to their houses after being forced out more than a year ago. Many areas are also expected to witness the same type of reconciliation.
