Pictures of a man believed to be the first Briton to carry out a suicide bomb attack in Syria have emerged showing him smiling with local children.

In one of the photographs, Abdul Waheed Majeed, 41, from Crawley, West Sussex, is seen wearing Minnie Mouse ears while he cuddles a girl and in another he kneels as children around him give the peace sign. The pictures were sent by Majeed from Syria to his family, who have said that as far as they were aware he was on a humanitarian mission, distributing aid collected from the UK. Arif Syed, 59, a community leader in Crawley, said the photos were taken at a refugee camp on the border between Turkey and Syria.

Majeed, a married father of three, is suspected of driving a lorry into a jail in Syria’s biggest city, Aleppo, and detonating a bomb last week.

The Foreign Office says it is still unable to confirm the reports. The al-Qaida-linked Jabhat al-Nusra, one of several jihadist groups active in the Syrian civil war, identified the suicide attacker only using his nom de guerre, Abu Suleiman al-Britani.

Syed, who has been representing the family, said Majeed would phone or Skype home every three days but communication had been lost with him about nine days ago.

When news emerged about the suicide bombing in Syria, Majeed’s family started to panic, he added.

Majeed’s uncle, Mohammad Jamil, 65, said Majeed – who is a father of two boys and a girl aged 18, 16 and 12 – had never shown any sign of extremism.

Sussex police have said their investigations into Majeed are ongoing. Five searches were carried out in the Crawley area and all were completed on Wednesday, a police spokeswoman said. Although Majeed is believed to be the first Briton to carry out a suicide bomb attack in Syria, hundreds are believed to have left the UK to fight in the war-ravaged Middle Eastern country.
