Syria: 24 registered candidacy for presidential elections as deadline expired

The total number of presidential hopefuls who registered their candidacy in the upcoming presidential elections increased to 24 as the deadline for registration expired May 1. Presidential elections have been scheduled for June 3. Syrians living abroad can vote at the Syrian Embassies on May 28.

The Speaker of the People’s Assembly, Mohammad Jihad al-Laham, announced Thursday that Ziad Adnan Hakawati, Ahmad Ali Qsei’eh, Mohammad Mohammad Nassr Mahmoud, Ali Hassan al-Hassan, Ahmad Omar Dabba, Mahmoud Naji Moussa and Hossein Mohammad Tijan registered to stand in the presidential elections, reports the Syrian news agency SANA.

Al-Laham said the Assembly received notes form the Supreme Constitutional Court that the new seven candidates had submitted applications to run for presidency. The candidates need to get written approvals from at least 35 MPs each, for their applications to be valid. 

The total number of presidential candidates was put at 24 as the deadline of registration ended today. Previously the Constitutional Court had already received candidacy applications from 17 persons. The deadline for application expired  at 3 pm on Thursday afternoon. The Constitutional Court will study the validity of the last minute registrations, starting off Friday.

A primary announcement about which candidates have received the final approval will be announces within five days, in accordance with the Constitution and the General Elections Law. 

As of 28 April, there had been seven candidates who already had been approved after it was established that they fulfill the necessary legal requirements for candidates. The seven candidates which had been approved by 28 April are Bashar al-Assad, Maher Abdul-Hafiz Hajjar, Hassan al-Nouri , Mohammad Firas Yassin Rajjouh, Abdul-Salam Youssef Salameh, Sawsan Omar al-Haddad, and Sameer Ahmad Mo’alla.
