Former US vice president Dick Cheney on Sunday strongly advocated for another US military invasion of Iraq while criticizing President Barack Obama’s policies in that country.

In an interview on ABC’s “This Week” program, Cheney accused the Obama administration of underestimating the threat of al-Qaeda-linked militants in Iraq and not doing enough to confront them.

“We’re in for big trouble in the years ahead because of his (Obama’s) refusal to recognize reality and because of his continual emphasis upon getting the U.S. basically to withdraw from that part of the world.”s

Takfiri militants of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) have captured several cities and towns in Iraq since June 10.

Cheney, one of the key architects of the 2003 US invasion of Iraq has increased his criticism of American foreign policy in recent months. White House officials have shrugged off Cheney’s criticism and have faulted him for misjudgments on the Iraq war.

The former US VP expressed no regret when the host reminded him of his 2003 remarks that the US military forces would be “greeted as liberators” in Iraq.

“I was a strong supporter then of going into Iraq,” Cheney said. “I’m a strong supporter now. Everybody knows what my position is. There’s nothing to be argued about there.”
