Israeli Jets Bomb a Weapons Warehouse in Damascus

Dec 8, 2014, Al-Masdar News

On Sunday Morning, Israeli Air Force jets violated Syrian airspace and bombarded a weapons warehouse located in the city of Al-Dimaas (west of Damascus), causing material damage to the building. A Syrian military source stated that the target was an old weapons warehouse that the Syrian Air Defense’s used in the past to store anti-aircraft missiles – the warehouse now possesses small weapons and ammunition.

No casualties were reported after the multiple Israeli Air Force raids; however, numerous explosions could be heard from as far as Syria’s capital of Damascus. This is not the first time the state of Israel has launched airstrikes in Syria during this conflict – the IAF has bombed a weapons convoy on the border of Lebanon, a military research facility in Rif Dimashq, the Dara’a Central Prison, and a Syrian Arab Army checkpoint in the Golan Heights.

The motive for the Israeli attack is not yet clear, but the recent talks between the Syrian and Russian Governments about the purchase of S-300 surface-to-air missiles (SAM) has Israeli Military Intelligence worried about their distribution to the Lebanese paramilitary and political group, Hezbollah (Party of God).

The United Nations has revealed information regarding numerous friendly encounters between the Al-Qaeda linked Al-Nusra Front (Jabhat Al-Nusra) and the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) near the 1974 Demilitarized Zone in the Golan Heights – the extent of their exchanges is still unknown. Israel has registered a number of rebel fighters into their hospitals after being wounded in battle, but little is known of their whereabouts and their entry into the country.
