Syrian priest raps Western silence after car-bomb kills 15 in Homs

Jan 23, 2015, Catholic Culture

A Syrian Catholic priest has blasted the silence of the Western media after 15 people were killed, and 50 others wounded, by a car-bomb explosion in the center of the city of Homs.

Father Hilal Ziad said that the January 21 explosion appeared to be targeted at university students, who accounted for most of the victims. It is not yet clear who is responsible for the attack.

“Where is the reaction from the rest of the world?” asked Father Ziad. “After the attacks in Paris all eyes were on France. But here? As far as I am aware, there has not been any reaction by anybody. Not a word. Only silence. Syria and the daily sufferings of its people are forgotten.”

In Homs, the 3rd-largest city of Syria, government forces have recently regained control after months of fighting with rebels. While an estimated 80,000 Christians have fled, Father Ziad has stayed to provide pastoral care for the remainder.
