The governments of Russia and Syria on 23 December reaffirmed their call for the US to end its occupation of Syria.
In a joint statement, the heads of the Russian and Syrian offices in charge of facilitating the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland, Mikhail Mizintsev and Hussein Makhlouf, said: ”The unprecedented sanctions pressure by the US and its European allies as well as the illegitimate deployment of foreign military units on Syria’s territory have a negative impact on the social, economic and humanitarian situation in the country.”
They highlighted that the sanctions Washington has imposed on Damascus have made it difficult for the Syrian government to provide for its citizens.
They also condemned the plans by the US and its allies to continue giving financial and material support to Syrian armed groups.
The comments were made during a video conference that discussed the humanitarian situation in Syria and the plight of refugees. They also came just a day after the parties to the Astana peace process demanded an end to the maneuvers by US government to destabilize Syria.
In a statement issued at the end of the 17th session of the Astana peace process, the representatives of Iran, Russia, and Turkey called on the US to withdraw its forces from Syria and respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.
Washington claims that its forces are in Syria to fight ISIS. However the Syrian government say the US is using the occupation to loot Syrian resources and destabilize the country by working with armed groups that have been trying to overthrow the government of Syria since 2011.
The presence of US soldiers in Syria is illegal under international law and a contravention of the UN charter due to the fact that their deployment was done without the consent of the Syrian government or the UN.
On top of this, over the years several reports have show that US troops often transport and collaborate with ISIS fighters across Syria and Iraq.
