The Israeli army said it opened fire and called in an airstrike on ‘terrorists’ in the town of Koya, west of Deraa

At least seven people were killed in Israeli attacks on the town of Koya west of southern Syria’s Deraa on 25 March, the latest of several recent strikes on the country.

“Seven people were killed, according to a preliminary toll, and several others were injured in an Israeli airstrike that targeted the town of Koya, west of Daraa,” local sources told Al Mayadeen.

Israeli tanks also opened fire at Koya, which lies in the Yarmouk Basin area. The shelling forced residents to flee to neighboring towns and villages.

“This morning, IDF forces identified a number of armed terrorists who fired at IDF forces in southern Syria. The force returned fire, and an aircraft attacked the terrorists. A hit was identified,” the Israeli army said in a statement on Tuesday morning.

The Israeli troops also stormed the town as injured residents were being evacuated for treatment.

Overnight, Israeli air raids targeted military sites in Palmyra in central Syria.

The Israeli army said early on 25 March that it “recently attacked military capabilities remaining in the area of the Syrian military bases of Palmyra and T4,” and “will continue to act to remove any threat to the citizens of the State of Israel.” Syrian authorities have not commented.

Israeli jets also bombarded the Deraa countryside on Monday night.

Last week, Israeli forces carried out a massive incursion in southern Syria, described as the biggest of its kind since Tel Aviv expanded its occupation across the country’s south following the collapse of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad’s government.

During this operation, Israeli forces reportedly razed military sites belonging to the former Syrian army, notably the Abu Darwish Company near Al-Nasiriya in the Quneitra countryside.

Israeli occupation forces swept across southern Syria after the ousting of Assad in December, moving past the demilitarized zone and expanding their decades-long illegal occupation in the country.

Tel Aviv has since continued to expand its occupation in Syria and has begun building permanent military sites in the southern region of the country. Israel has said its military presence and occupation in Syria will be indefinite.

Since the Assad government collapsed, hundreds of Israeli airstrikes have targeted military infrastructure that belonged to the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), Syria’s former army.
