Syrian Presidency Thwarts Suwayda Peace Initiative

by al Hawar (ANHA), July 18, 2025

The transitional government presidency in Syria has thwarted a truce agreement aimed at ending the bloody tensions between the people of Suwayda and the tribes in the south, despite extensive mediation efforts involving dignitaries from Daraa and religious leaders from Suwayda.

The Presidential Palace in Damascus rejected a truce agreement that was being prepared between dignitaries from Daraa and Hauran Bedouins on one side, and religious and field leaders from Suwayda on the other, which could have put an end to the fighting and sectarian tensions plaguing southern Syria, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Syrian Observatory learned from private sources that the initiative came after intensive contacts led by Daraa dignitaries in coordination with Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajri and local leaders in Suwayda, with the latter expressing readiness to release detainees as a goodwill gesture to pave the way for a lasting peaceful resolution, under the auspices of prominent Hauran figures.

According to the sources, the mediators contacted the Presidential Palace to gain its approval for the agreement, but the matter was referred to the head of internal security in Suwayda, Major General Ahmed al-Dalati, who requested time to consult with the presidency. Less than an hour later, al-Dalati informed the mediators of the supreme leadership’s rejection of the agreement, stating that approving it would mean “accepting defeat,” as he put it.

Al-Dalati confirmed that the leadership does not support “tribal mobilization to liberate Suwayda,” but it will not intervene to resolve the crisis, leaving the matter “to the people of the region,” according to statements attributed to the Ministry of Defense and the General Command of the Army.

The sources emphasized that this initiative included dignitaries from Daraa, Izraa, Nawa, Busra, and national and tribal figures, in an attempt to stop the bloodshed and prevent southern Syria from sliding into a prolonged civil war that could have catastrophic humanitarian consequences.

On the ground, transitional government forces carried out intense artillery and rocket shelling targeting several residential neighborhoods in Suwayda and gatherings of local armed factions from the Druze community.
