Statement by The Sovereignty Support Movement for West Asia, March 1, 2026
The Sovereignty Support Movement unequivocally condemns the U.S. Israeli war on Iran. We condemn the long term use of sanctions by the United States to oppress the Iranian people and undermine the Iranian state. We condemn the continual efforts by Israel to sabotage the peace and well being of the Iranian state and the Iranian people. On the first day of this new war, the United States and Israel attacked at least two schools. In one case, at least 100 grammar school girls were murdered in their classroom. Later the same day, they attacked another school, and a stadium where girl’s soccer teams were practicing.
At the same time, they made a point of killing as many high level Iranian officials as possible, including the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. These are war crimes, worse yet, war crimes committed in the context of an unprovoked war, initiated during negotiations that led the world and the Iranians to believe that they would negotiate a peace rather than attack Iran. At Nuremberg, the international tribunal said that the conduct of an unprovoked war is the greatest crime of all.
Shia Muslims across the region are furious about the murder of the Supreme Leader. There have been attacks on the US embassy in Iraq and Pakistan, and against the Sunni government that hosts the U.S. base in Bahrain. A wise and humble man, the second highest leader in Shia Islam, Ayatollah Khamenei will be sincerely missed by his followers who are outraged at his murder and that of several other family members.
Iran was prepared for these assaults on the government. I don’t think anyone can be prepared for the mass killing of little children. Mohammad Marandi, an Iranian college professor and journalist, now refers to the current US and Israel governments as the Epstein Government, child molesters and murderers. We cannot disagree. However, high level Iranian officials had selected and prepared their replacements before the missiles rained down. The battle plans were in place and the Iranians immediately retaliated against their attackers. Iran has not attacked anyone in more than a century, except in self defense. like the Palestinians whom they have long supported, they have a right to self defense. Unlike the Palestinians, they have sophisticated and powerful arsenal of defensive weapons.
Israel’s twelve day war against Iran in June ended when it became clear that Israel was losing, and that the losses were more than the state could bear. For this new war, Israel has obtained the support of the United States President and significant portions of the government. Military officials had warned Trump and his associates that this war was not a good idea and that the United States would be overextended in the effort. So far Iran has done considerable damage to U.S. bases in the region as well as to Israel targets in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. The Saudis and the Gulf Emirates are outraged! But they have been reminded that these are attacks on U.S. resources and U.S. properties used to harm the Iranian people. U.S. warships have been attacked and soldiers wounded and killed.
Meanwhile our hearts are breaking for the long suffering people of Iran, now living under a rain of missiles. Moreover, it appears that Israel is also bombing Beirut, since Hezbollah has joined the fight, and we don’t know who will be next. Iraq? Yemen? These aren’t surprises. Israel has been routinely killing the people in the south of Lebanon since a ceasefire was called a year ago, just as it has continued to starve and attack Palestinians since the so-called ceasefire there.
It will be up to Iran to stop this vicious and merciless assault on the peoples of West Asia once and for all. We believe that they can and will do so.
