Palestine Update Resources

Unfortunately, millions of Syrians are still suffering from another tragedy that has made refugees out of half the population and impoverished most of the rest.

Yahya is a 61-year-old shop owner from Sheikh Saeed, a rural village on the outskirts of Aleppo.

In 2013, his house and shop were looted and torched during an attack by an armed terrorist gang. Five years later after the village was liberated, Yahya returned to Sheikh Saeed only to find his home and shop were burned and demolished. He lost everything.

Yahya was determined to rebuild his life and began selling a few products in the burnt out shell of his shop. With his earnings he rebuilt his home.

The US, Israel and Turkiye illegally occupy more than a third of Syria’s territory, including its main agricultural land and nearly all of its oil producing areas. In addition, US sanctions deprive Syria of nearly all commerce and destroy its currency. Medical and industrial equipment is falling apart, and a large segment of the population is undernourished. The US denies Syria access to its own petroleum, and the sanctions prevent importation of foreign fuel. The sanctions, combined with the occupations, have caused Syrians to die from cold last winter, due to the lack of fuel and the inability to import construction materials and equipment to rebuild damaged housing.

The earthquake that devastated northern Syria and Turkey last year partially destroyed his house. Yahya and his family were not provided any assistance due to the US sanctions imposed on Syria, which prevents organizations from providing aid or contributing to reconstruction.

Because SSM is on the ground in Syria and with your support, we will be able to renovate Yahya’s house, strengthen walls, purchase new doors and windows, and install a solar energy system with a battery and inverter to repair Yahya’s life and get him and his family back on their feet.

Moreover, your donations create dignified work and sustain multiple families in need of your financial support.

The Syria Support Movement again needs your help. We are providing food, shelter and medical assistance where it is most needed despite the obstacles placed by the sanctions. Over the next few weeks, we will provide reports of our work, starting with the distribution of food aid to 100 of the neediest families near Aleppo and other areas affected by both the earthquake and the sanctions.

SSM distributed 100 boxes of food aid that provided a lifeline for 700 individuals, half of them children. As always, every penny donated to SSM goes directly to support Syrian families in desperate need of humanitarian aid.

Please help as much as you can. We know that US policy is causing death and misery in many places, but Syria is one of the most neglected by the aid organizations. To make a US tax-deductible donation, please visit https://syriasupportmovement.org/donate-2/

How do you and SSM help Syrians?

SSM is a US-based international charity that is providing humanitarian aid to Syria. We cooperate with the government of Syria while following the sanctions regulations on the distribution of humanitarian aid, which is permitted by the sanctions.

Our humanitarian aid will continue to provide health care, shelter, and economic support to Syrian communities in need, with current emphasis on Syrian families suffering from inhumane US sanctions.

As the first active US charity to be invited to register in Syria, we will be able to provide exponentially more support to Syrians suffering from a deficiency of their basic needs due to continued US sanctions on the country.

How does your gift turn into humanitarian aid in Syria?

Hussam Tariyeh, that’s how. Husam is the SSM driving force of humanitarian aid and volunteer work in Syria.

For the past 13 years, Hussam has donated much of his time, money and resources to humanitarian aid work in Syria.

“Due to the catastrophic economic conditions that Syria is experiencing, I can no longer personally provide financial or material assistance to those in need. I offered my time, effort, and experience to SSM. They provide money donated by people of good will to help the poorest and most vulnerable people in the community such as women, children, the sick and the disabled,” says Hussam.

In 2019, Hussam joined SSM. He created an immediate impact through the major role he plays as the coordinator of volunteer work on the ground in Syria. For example, if SSM pays for the expenses of a medical operation or treatment of any kind, Hussam is present at the hospital or clinic and personally pays the expenses. He is there with the people we serve.
