Earthquake Appeal Update

Syria Support Movement Report

On behalf of the families and group we are supporting, I would like to personally thank for your kind donations to support in our Earthquake Appeal and the Syrian families affected by the massive earthquake that hit Syria and Turkey on Monday 6th February 2023. It has been humbling to see the quick and generous response from people like you to this tragedy. Your donation is a lifeline to people who have lost everything. Thank you, and please continue to pray for everyone affected by the earthquake across the region – as well as by the continuing conflict in Syria.

We are sharing below some of the help and support your generous contribution has provided over the last 12 days.

Background

In the early hours of 6 February, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey and Syria. Aftershocks were felt throughout the last 10 days, including two further earthquakes of 6.5 and 7.5 magnitude on 6th February and more recent aftershocks 5.4 in magnitude on 17th February and another earthquake on 20th February 2023.

These earthquakes are the worst to strike the region in nearly 100 years The severity and devastation of the earthquake and continuous aftershocks have reached many cities in Syria like Aleppo, Latakia, Jableh Hama and Idlib. Millions of people have been severely affected and over 50 thousand people are now reported to have been killed by the effect of the earthquake, along with many thousands more injured and tens of thousands have been forced to flee their homes and are now living  in shelter accommodations or temporary make-shift shelters facing freezing temperatures. Infrastructure is also heavily damaged while limited fuel and electricity affect every aspect of life.

Support given so far.

Since the initiation of this appeal, we have raised £7,055 and manged to support Mosaic with the provision and shelter for 20 affected families. We have also provided blankets and mattresses.

Initially, we sent 2 donations to Latakia.  The first, on 7th February was used to buy mattresses, cushions and blankets.   A second support, sent on 11 February, went for food and basic necessities.  On February 13th, we sent a donation to Hama, and on the 15th, we sent funds to Kafroun to support displaced families from Aleppo.   This was used to distribute baby milk and nappies as well as medication, including medication for liver disease (a number of liver case have been found during the initial evaluation by Dr Giath Ali in Kafroun).  Meanwhile, we are in the process of sending another  donation to Kafroun to help with a wheelchair for an elderly lady, along with towels and house equipment

The 5th donation  was sent on 17th Feb to support the affected families in Hama.  A 6th donation was sent through Tearfund to support affected Syrians.Another donation went to support an affected grandmother in Southern Turkey

We also sent, on behalf of Syria support movement, another donation to support the work of Mosaic  the families affected by the earthquake.  We will continue to work with NGO’s and families in Syria to make sure that all the money collected is allocated to help support the victims of the earthquake,

Poverty and lack of resources is not God’s plan. You are.

We will continue to work with NGO’s and families in Syria to make sure that all the money collected is allocated to help support the victims of the earthquake for as long as required.
