What/who are the Five Eyes? In a wide-ranging interview about Engler’s recent exposé in Canadian Dimension, Phil Taylor elicits from Yves Engler the origins, present activities, and dangers of this exclusive and official intelligence-sharing network of five mainly white, anglophone, Protestant relics of the British Empire: the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
More exclusive a club than even NATO, the Five Eyes have a special relationship to the US Empire. In fact, it is the realization of Winston Churchill’s call in his famous “Iron Curtain” speech in Fulton, Missouri, in 1946 for an new “Anglo-American Empire.” France, under President Sarkozy, was refused admittance. And at a time when the demands of Black Lives Matter are becoming widely accepted, the Five Eyes countries specialize in systemic discrimination against non-white majority countries. Four of the five countries failed to ratify the UN Declaration on the rights of Indigeneous Peoples.
Most importantly today, the Five Eyes treat China xenophobically, focussing on demonizing that country and seeking, in a meeting in Ottawa in July 2018, to ban its flagship corporation, Huawei, from any role in the rollout of 5G internet technology.
The arrest of Meng Wanzhou in Canada in late 2018 followed directly from the Five Eyes meeting in Ottawa and, despite the interests of corporate Canada in finding new markets, threatens to worsen relations between China and the English-speaking world to the point of creating a New Cold War with China.
The Five Eyes also share intelligence on Syria and Iran and, no doubt, collaborate with Israeli intelligence.
